Sometimes we underestimate the power of a few simple words.
We tell ourselves, “They probably already know I care.”
“Someone else will encourage them.”
“I don’t know what to say.”
So we say nothing.
Meanwhile, someone else is quietly wondering if anyone sees them at all.
Encouragement Is More Than Being Nice
Encouragement is not pretending life is easy.
It is not offering quick answers or empty clichés.
It is not trying to fix someone’s pain.
Real encouragement says, “I see your struggle.”
“I’m still here.”
“You don’t have to carry this alone.”
For someone living with an invisible illness, chronic pain, depression, anxiety, grief, or another hidden battle, those words can become an anchor during a difficult season.
Sometimes the greatest gift we give is not advice.
It is our presence.
The Battles We Don’t Always See
Many people become experts at hiding their struggles.
They smile through pain.
They quietly leave events early.
They cancel plans because their body simply will not cooperate.
They answer, “I’m fine,” because explaining feels too exhausting.
From the outside, life may appear perfectly normal.
Inside, they are fighting battles no one else can see.
That is one reason The Flying Frog exists.
We are helping people feel seen, heard, and less alone by shining light on the battles people don’t always see.
Small Acts Often Leave the Biggest Impact
Encouragement does not have to be elaborate.
A handwritten card.
A thoughtful text.
A phone call.
A meal.
A simple, “I’ve been thinking about you today.”
Those moments often arrive exactly when they are needed most.
Many people keep encouraging cards for years.
They tuck them into a Bible.
They place them inside a journal.
They save them in a drawer and read them again when life feels especially heavy.
Text messages can become treasures too.
People screenshot them.
They scroll back through old conversations searching for hope when discouragement returns.
The words may have taken only a few moments to write.
The encouragement can last for years.
The Gift of a Shared Prayer
Prayer may be one of the greatest forms of encouragement we can offer.
But there is something especially powerful about letting someone know what you prayed.
Not simply, “I’m praying for you.”
But, “This is what I prayed for you today.”
When someone can read those words…
When they know exactly what you asked God to do…
When they return to that prayer during another difficult day…
Your prayer becomes more than a quiet act of kindness.
It becomes something they can hold onto.
Sometimes we do not have words of our own.
Reading someone else’s prayer reminds us that we are not standing before God alone.
Barnabas Chose Encouragement
One of my favorite people in Scripture is Barnabas.
His very name means “Son of Encouragement.”
He welcomed Saul when others were afraid.
He stood beside John Mark after others had given up on him.
He invested in people who needed someone to believe in them.
Barnabas reminds us that encouragement is not simply something we do.
It is part of who we become.
Imagine how different our homes, churches, workplaces, and communities would look if more of us chose to become encouragers.
What If You Are the One Who Needs Encouragement?
Maybe this week’s article feels personal.
Maybe you are tired.
Maybe you have wondered if anyone notices how hard you are trying.
If that is you, I hope you hear this today:
God sees every unseen battle.
He knows every tear no one else noticed.
He understands every prayer you were too exhausted to speak.
You are not forgotten.
You are deeply loved.
And even when your strength feels small, God remains faithful.
This Week’s Challenge
Before next Sunday, encourage one person.
Not because you have the perfect words.
But because someone may need to know they are not alone.
Write a card.
Send a thoughtful text.
Make a phone call.
Pray for someone.
Then, if you are comfortable, share that prayer with them.
Your few minutes of encouragement may become something they return to for months, or even years.
You may never fully know the difference your kindness made.
But God does.
“Therefore encourage one another and build one another up, just as you also are doing.”
1 Thessalonians 5:11 NASB 2020
A Simple Prayer
Heavenly Father,
Thank You for being the God who sees every hidden struggle and understands every burden we carry. Thank You that no tear, no prayer, and no difficult day ever escapes Your notice.
Help us become people who encourage others with our words, our actions, and our prayers. Give us eyes to notice those who feel unseen, hearts that are quick to show compassion, and courage to reach out when someone needs hope.
For those who are feeling discouraged today, remind them that they are deeply loved and never alone. Surround them with people who will encourage them, strengthen them, and point them toward You.
Teach us not only to pray for others, but also to let them know they have been prayed for. May our words become reminders of Your love, Your faithfulness, and Your presence.
Use us this week to bring light into someone’s darkness and hope into someone’s difficult season.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
